Dentures are removable dental appliances designed and fabricated to replace missing teeth or an entire row of teeth. They are typically made from durable resin, although higher-end prostheses may be made from porcelain or metal alloys. Depending on the number of natural teeth remaining, a patient may need a partial denture or an entire arch of teeth. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are for patients who still have some remaining teeth intact. These removable prosthetics restore the patient’s smile and allow them to eat and speak normally.

Getting a set of dentures usually takes a couple of weeks. At Thakkar Dental, the first appointment involves taking X-rays and molds of the mouth. The dentures will be identical to your teeth in terms of how they will function once fitted in the mouth. Thus, molds of the patient’s mouth will be needed. These molds create a model of the patient’s mouth so that the finished dentures will fit properly. While the dentures are being fabricated, we can provide patients with temporary dentures to wear until their permanent set is ready.

When the dentures have been fabricated, patients will return to have them placed. Once inserted, we can adjust the fit as needed so that they will be comfortable and functional. Patients should continue to visit the dentist regularly so that we can check the condition of their gums and make sure that the dentures still fit correctly.

Types of Dentures

Full Dentures

A complete denture is a removable appliance that replaces all teeth on an arch. An acrylic base fits over your gums and is either secured by suction or attached to dental implants for better stability. This type replaces an entire arch of teeth. Your dentist is the best person to talk to about complete dentures, as they can advise you about the different types of dentures available and help you determine which option is best for you.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when a patient is missing some but not all of their teeth. The prosthetic rests on the gums where the missing teeth used to be and is secured by metal clasps or precision attachments onto the remaining healthy teeth. These removable appliances are custom-made to fit comfortably around existing teeth and help patients make the most of their natural teeth. Partial dentures can replace one tooth or several teeth.
